In 1950 Zofia Komala began studying pharmacy in the Medical Academy in Kraków [before 1939 and from 1990 onward a part of the Jagiellonian University]. At the same time, recognized a highly talented student, she was offered a position of the junior assistant in the Academy.
Since 1957 until her retirement in 2000 she was employed in the Department of Experimental Zoology, Polish Academy of Sciences (since 1969 a part of the Institute of Systematic and Experimmental Zoology, now Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals).
Research activities of Zofia Komala were mainly focused at the distribution of Paramecium in the Polish Carpathians.
